Four St. Bernard High School students who entered the Congressional Institute’s Nationwide High School Visual Arts Competition were honored at a districtwide recognition of student work from the 43rd District, held May 9 at the Lawndale Community Center.

The competition recognizes, promotes and encourages artistic talent in the nation and each congressional district. St. Bernard had four entrants in the showing: Jasmine Strachan, Jordan Williams, Chris Reyes and Marquis Cox.

Of her piece, “Red Sunset Over the Pacific,” Strachan said, "I saw it as the perfect opportunity to showcase the beautiful scenery we have by being near the beach. I thought it was the perfect image to submit, and for it to go as far as it did was very flattering and rewarding.”

Accompanying the students to the reception was Mark Griswold, director of Visual and Performing Arts, whose background includes a 1992 Emmy Award winner for his work with Sports America’s Cup.

Seeking the face of God in the Scriptures

Archbishop José H. Gomez

Prayer is seeking the face of God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church recalls the story of how St. John Vianney once found a peasant praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament. The saint asked him what he was doing, and the man replied: “I look at him and he looks at me.”
