Blessed Sacrament receives Parish Life Director

The first Parish Life Director at a Jesuit-sponsored parish was installed July 17 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Hollywood.

Auxiliary Bishop Edward Clark and Jesuit Father John McGarry, Provincial, concelebrated the installation Mass of Yolanda Scott Brown, DMin., before an assembly of nearly 1,000 people. Brown most recently served seven years as Pastoral Associate at Dolores Mission in Boyle Heights, also a Jesuit-administered parish in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

WYD pilgrims' task: Help pope revive faith in Spain

Pope Benedict XVI will visit Spain in late August, celebrating the youthfulness and vigor of Catholic faith in a country where the Catholic majority often seems to have little or no impact on modern public life.

The primary focus on the pope's trip Aug. 18-21 will be on Catholic youths from around the globe participating in World Youth Day.
But Pope Benedict also will meet with Spain's royal family and with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, whose government has promoted several policies opposed by the church, including relaxing Spain's divorce laws, easing restrictions on abortion, legalizing same-sex marriage and allowing gay couples to adopt.

St. Ignatius’ 100th: A day of joy, glory and gratitude

July 31 — the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola — was indeed the appropriate day for the Highland Park parish named in his honor to celebrate its Centennial Mass.

As the entrance procession wound its way into the church to Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” loud applause and cheering could be heard as parishioners caught sight of present pastor Father Edwin Duyshart leading the procession that included Msgrs. Sean Acton (pastor from 1970-1978) and Alfred Hernandez (1978-1997), and Father Arturo Velasco (1997-2010), as well as Archbishop Jose Gomez and San Fernando Region Auxiliary Bishop Gerald Wilkerson.
