I don’t have a very good memory. I forget my glasses when they are actually resting on my forehead. I forget my phone and search frantically for it, only to find that it’s in my pocket.

In today’s Gospel reading Mary Magdalene is the first to discover the empty tomb. Her initial thought is that someone had stolen Jesus’ body. She runs to fetch some of the disciples.

I don’t really enjoy Passion Sunday very much. The story is just so bleak. It’s not bad enough that Jesus is crucified and dies. In the process, everyone abandons him, from the crowds at large to his closest followers. Even Peter, who claims he would never deny his master, disowns Jesus three times.

My son tells me to wake him up at six each morning so he can exercise before school. So every morning, I poke my head into his room and tell him it’s time to get up if he wants to work out.

You’ve probably heard the joke about the person who refuses to leave his home while floodwaters rise, refusing attempts at rescue because, as he tells each would be rescuer that comes by boat, and helicopter, “God will save me.”
Prayer of the MonthPapal intentions for November: That priests who experience difficulties may find comfort in their suffering, support in their doubts, and confirmation in their fidelity. That as fruit of the continental mission, Latin American Churches may send missionaries to other Churches.
Papal intentions for December: That children who are victims of abandonment or violence may find the love and protection they need. That Christians, enlightened by the Word incarnate, may prepare humanity for the Savior's coming.
