When I was a campus minister (a long time ago!), I often struggled with the fact that I was being paid to perform Christian ministry. I wasn’t paid much, of course — in many ways I was more like a subsidized volunteer than a professional pastoral minister. But still, at times I was uncomfortable in the position.

In Jesus, God endures our worst

I don’t really enjoy Passion Sunday very much. The story is just so bleak. It’s not bad enough that Jesus is crucified and dies. In the process, everyone abandons him, from the crowds at large to his closest followers. Even Peter, who claims he would never deny his master, disowns Jesus three times.

My son tells me to wake him up at six each morning so he can exercise before school. So every morning, I poke my head into his room and tell him it’s time to get up if he wants to work out.
