Written by none Friday, 09 November 2012 00:00

Archbishop José Gomez received this year’s Community Service Award at Loyola Marymount University’s 30th annual Latino Alumni Association Scholarship Awards dinner held Nov. 1 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

Archbishop Gomez, one of three Association honorees, was recognized for his commitment to the Latino community, his leadership and his advocacy for Catholic education.

Also honored was the Chivas USA soccer team for its commitment to Latino youth and its promotion of health and education programming in the community. Recently, the Chivas organization, in partnership with the General Consulate of Mexico in Los Angeles, established a scholarship at LMU to support Latino students who demonstrate financial need.

The third honoree was LMU alumnus Armando Castro ’85, a partner in the law firm DLA Piper. Castro received the association’s Alumni Role Model Award for his service to LMU and LAA, commitment to volunteerism and charitable giving, as well as his outstanding career accomplishments. A former LAA scholarship recipient, Castro is a mentor to first-generation students attending college and an active member of the Hispanic Bar Association.

Over the last 30 years, LMU’s Latino Alumni Association has awarded more than 1,400 scholarships totaling more than $3 million, and provides mentorships and career development counseling.

Papal intentions for May: That administrators of justice may act always with integrity and right conscience; That seminaries, especially those of mission churches, may form pastors after the Heart of Christ, fully dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel.
