Local News: Cathedral sets 10th anniversary events
LOS ANGELES — The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will celebrate its tenth anniversary with special events on September 1 and 2.
ollowing the 5 p.m. Mass on Sept. 1, a gala fundraising dinner will take place on the Cathedral Plaza. For ticket information, please call (213) 637-7636. The anniversary also will be highlighted at Masses celebrated Sept. 2 at 8 and 10 a.m. (in English) and 12:30 p.m. (in Spanish).
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels was dedicated Sept. 2, 2002, and has quickly become a center for celebrating faith, culture and significant events in downtown Los Angeles. It is located at 555 W. Temple St., Los Angeles; (213) 680-5200.
Mount host lectures on women in China
LOS ANGELES — Mount St. Mary’s College hosts the first in a series of free public lectures on women in China on Aug. 23 with “YinYang: The Way of Ways” by Robin Wang, director of Asian and Pacific Studies at Loyola Marymount University.
Top scholars in Chinese history, poetry, art and literature are delivering six lectures beginning with this one. The free events are funded by a two-year $100,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The lectures are one part of the Mount project “Women in China: nternationalizing the Humanities and Professional Studies Curricula,” which launches in July to integrate international cultures into undergraduate and graduate coursework. The project ties humanities courses into the Mount’s professional schools of nursing, physical therapy, education and business.
Future lectures include:
—September 13: “Women in Chinese History,” by Ping Yao, professor, Department of History, and director, Asian and Asian American Studies, Cal State Los Angeles.
—Oct. 25: “Women of Classical Chinese Poetry,” by Hu Ying, associate professor of Chinese Literature, Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, University of California, Irvine.
—Jan. 10: “Empresses, Art and Agency,” by Hui-shu Lee, associate professor of Art History, UCLA.
—Jan. 31: “Women in 20th Century Chinese Literature,” by Shu-mei Shih, professor, Comparative Literature/Asian Languages and Cultures/Asian American Studies, UCLA
—Feb. 21: “What Can Chinese Film Tell Us About Modern Chinese History?” by Zhiwei Xiao, associate professor of History, Cal State San Marcos.

FOR VOCATIONS — The Knights and Ladies of Peter Claver, Los Angeles, as well as their Junior Knights and Junior Daughters participated in a “Bike Ride by the Sea for Vocations” Aug. 4 in Marina del Rey. The ride was to encourage more brothers, deacons, priests and sisters among the African American Catholic community.
