Obituaries: Deacon Gary Patterson
Funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 2 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Irwindale, for Deacon Gary Patterson, who died July 26.
Ordained to the diaconate in 1995, Deacon Patterson and Marge previously served as chairs on the archdiocesan Deacon Council's Spirituality Committee. He also served in various Council Leadership roles.
“We will miss him and his leadership dearly,” said Deacon Manny Martinez, director of deacons for the archdiocese. “Both he and Marge have been a wonderful prayerful support to me personally as director.”
Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Rowland Heights. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to L.A. Deacons Charity Fund, Inc.; Citrus Valley Hospice; or Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church Building Fund.
Sr. Mary Agnes Curran, PBVM
Funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 8 at the Presentation Motherhouse in in San Francisco for Presentation Sister Mary Agnes (Bernice) Curran, who died Aug. 2 in San Francisco at age 93.
A native of Berkeley, she was a Sister of the Presentation for 77 years and began her ministry in Catholic education in 1937. She taught kindergarten and first grade in Catholic schools in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Jose and Berkeley; her service included 15 years at St. Benedict School, Montebello.
In 1975, Sister Curran retired from fulltime teaching, but continued as a part-time teacher and teacher’s aide at St. John Vianney School, San Jose, until 1993. Since then, she was engaged in prayer ministry and in corresponding with women in the Chowchilla Prison.
Memorial contributions to the Sisters of the Presentation are preferred. Contributions can be sent to Sisters of the Presentation, Development Office, 281 Masonic Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94118.
