At St. Eugene: Evangelization requires knowing Scripture

More than 100 African American Catholics from about 30 parishes participating in a town hall meeting were urged by keynote speaker Archbishop José Gomez to make it a point to read the Bible and to share with others the significance of each aspect of the Mass, especially the Eucharist, as a way to improve evangelization efforts.

The archbishop said that a “new evangelization” is a personal priority for him, as it is for the archdiocesan Synod and for the U.S. Conference of Bishops.

‘Dog Day’ at Cathedral creates community

The fifth annual Downtown Dog Day Afternoon at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels would have distracted Snoopy from chasing the Red Baron long enough to land his Sopwith Camel biplane in the Cathedral’s “plaza of the people” — if the intrepid Beagle could have only found room.

This year’s bowwow benefit drew a record 794 dogs and 1,359 people, who carpeted the popular sacred gathering place. The July 26 6-to-9 p.m. happening, in fact, resembled a canine’s outdoor Noah’s ark with a distinct SoCal twist.

WYD pilgrims' task: Help pope revive faith in Spain

Pope Benedict XVI will visit Spain in late August, celebrating the youthfulness and vigor of Catholic faith in a country where the Catholic majority often seems to have little or no impact on modern public life.

The primary focus on the pope's trip Aug. 18-21 will be on Catholic youths from around the globe participating in World Youth Day.
But Pope Benedict also will meet with Spain's royal family and with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, whose government has promoted several policies opposed by the church, including relaxing Spain's divorce laws, easing restrictions on abortion, legalizing same-sex marriage and allowing gay couples to adopt.

Knights of Peter Claver aims to promote faith among youth
