In Encino: Learning respect for nature, 4-H style

A 4-H Club, with more than 30 enthusiastic students from grades 5-8, has been formed at St. Cyril of Jerusalem School in Encino.

School parents Adrienne Ryan and Gabriel Johanssen initially broached the idea with science teacher Toni Stolo, who agreed to become the club’s advisor.

A new book by the archdiocesan superintendent of elementary schools invites school leaders to re-imagine how Catholic schools operate.

“Changing the Ending” by Dr. Kevin Baxter provided the basis for his well-attended professional development session on educational administration at this year’s National Catholic Education Association’s convention based on key points from his new book, published by the NCEA.

Young Manhattan Beach classical singer heads to Juilliard

There were auditions in front of the most skilled nationwide music masters, plus a written test, plus a screening of a CD she had previously sent — all to get into the prestigious Juilliard Dance, Drama and Music School in New York.

In Compton: Prayer, faith and education

Mutual support between leaders and parishioners make a difference at Our Lady of Victory Church.

A shooting in the back alley of the rectory was part of the welcoming for Trinitarian Father Francisco Valdovinos when he arrived in California to pastor Our Lady of Victory Church in Compton, where no day goes by without neighbors hearing the sirens of police cars, ambulances or fire trucks.
