A recommendation that all health plans be required to cover contraceptives without a patient co-payment "fails the tests of logic and sound science" and "does not constitute good clinical medicine," according to the Catholic Medical Association.
In a July 20 statement, the Bala Cynwyd, Pa.-based association criticized the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Preventive Services for Women for recommending that the Department of Health and Human Services include "the full range of Food and Drug Administration-approved contraceptive methods, sterilization procedures and patient education and counseling" as mandated services for all health plans under the new health reform law.

Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia and appointed Denver Archbishop Charles J. Chaput to succeed him as head of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.The appointment was announced July 19 in Washington by Msgr. Jean-Francois Lantheaume, charge d'affaires at the apostolic nunciature in Washington. Archbishop Chaput is scheduled to be installed as Philadelphia's new archbishop Sept. 8 at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul.

Archdiocese welcomes 48 new deacons from Santa Barbara Region parishes.
The largest clerical ordination in the nine-year history of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels took place July 16 as 48 men from 24 Santa Barbara Region parishes were ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacon by Archbishop José Gomez.
