New St. Thomas library: Where ‘the world meets the world’

It used to be that St. Thomas the Apostle students had to go to the school’s basement to read the few books the institution carried. No more.

On June 10 a brand new library featuring $10,000 worth of books was officially opened during a ribbon-cutting ceremony, to the joy of the whole K-8 school community celebrating its first year in a state-of-the-art building at 15th Street and Normandie Avenue.

Prison ministry is an unchartered and sometimes “scary” world for many. So it was for Jeanne Pieper and Paul McMahon.

Despite being raised by devout Catholic parents who instilled in their children the importance of service to others, and being educated in Catholic schools that encouraged a hands-on approach to Catholic social teachings, fears and stereotypes kept them away from the ministry to the incarcerated, until different events slowly propelled a change in their mindset and in their attitude.

Jockey Joe Talamo riding high on SoCal circuit

In Little Tokyo: A testimony to faith and resilience

During the last weekend of June, the Youth Group at St. Francis Xavier Chapel in Little Tokyo took a trip to the Sierra Nevada mountains for some camping fun. On their way home, the group stopped at Manzanar Internment Camp not far from Lone Pine.
