Homeless: A mom with two kids now more likely to be counted

Out of work and living in a shelter, Jasmine, a single mother, has one thing on her mind: reuniting her family.

Son Emanuel, 3, is staying with Jasmine — who asked that her last name not be used — at the Ozanam Family Shelter in Edison, N.J., run by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Metuchen.

Obituaries: Msgr. Cyril Navin, retired Encino pastor

Funeral Mass will be celebrated July 8, 11 a.m. at St. Cyril of Jerusalem Church, Encino, for Msgr. Cyril Navin, pastor emeritus, who died on June 24, the 66th anniversary of his ordination as a priest.

A Vigil Service will be celebrated for Msgr. Navin on what would have been his 90th birthday --- July 7, 7 p.m. at St. Cyril, where the Irish native had served for 40 years.

Bishops OK statement on assisted suicide, charter revisions

The U.S. bishops June 16 approved a policy statement on physician-assisted suicide, the first on the issue by the bishops as a body, and they also approved revisions to their 2002 "Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People."

Budget analyst: Disproportionate share of spending cuts impact poor, disabled

The budget that Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed one day after its majority-vote passage June 15 would have done nothing to resolve California’s ongoing fiscal crisis while adding to spending cuts already adversely affecting public schools and the social safety net, said the executive director of the nonpartisan California Budget Project.
