The largest clerical ordination in the nine-year history of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels took place July 16 as 48 men from 24 Santa Barbara Region parishes were ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacon by Archbishop José Gomez.

With their combined athletic and performing talents, Lydia Edwards and Samantha Labrecque could have done their Girl Scout Gold Award projects anywhere in their San Fernando Valley community. But the teenagers both chose to carry out their projects for Girl Scouts’ highest award at Guadalupe Community Center in Canoga Park, a program of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc., assisting low-income families and refugees with services including emergency food and clothing, English classes, job training and placement, after-school tutoring and sports/recreational activities.

Against opposition from state Catholic officials, California has become the first state in the nation to require its public school social studies texts to specifically include the role and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.
The law also prohibits the state Board of Education from adopting instructional materials that discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Gov. Jerry Brown signed the bill into law, sponsored by Democratic Sen. Mark Leno of San Francisco, July 14.

Fears and stereotypes kept Jeanne Pieper and Paul McMahon away from the ministry to the incarcerated, despite being raised by devout Catholic parents and educated in Catholic schools with a hands-on approach to Catholic social teachings, namely social justice.Later in their lives, a series of events led them to prison ministry with both of them developing their own style of what could be called a “writing” ministry.
