In the wake of two terror attacks in Norway that left at least 93 people dead, Pope Benedict XVI called for an end to hatred and ideologies that promote evil.
"We are all deeply saddened by the serious terrorist acts," the pope said after praying the Angelus with pilgrims at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo July 24.

Noon at Kenneth Hahn Regional Park off south La Cienega Boulevard, and Vireyma Aparicio was still wearing the lime-green frilly skirt and eye-catching blouse with the big butterfly across the front. It was the outfit she donned to perform an energetic dance version of Cyndi Lauper’s classic “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” with other fourth-graders from St. Vincent School in St. Mary’s Academy’s gym earlier July 15.

Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia and appointed Denver Archbishop Charles J. Chaput to succeed him as head of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
The appointment was announced July 19 in Washington by Msgr. Jean-Francois Lantheaume, charge d'affaires at the apostolic nunciature in Washington. Archbishop Chaput is scheduled to be installed as Philadelphia's new archbishop Sept. 8 at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul.

Archdiocese welcomes 48 new deacons from Santa Barbara Region parishes.
The largest clerical ordination in the nine-year history of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels took place July 16 as 48 men from 24 Santa Barbara Region parishes were ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacon by Archbishop José Gomez.
