World Youth Day: Looking back and ahead to Madrid

World Youth Day 2011 will be held Aug. 16-21 in Madrid, the second time Spain has hosted the international gathering of youth since Pope John Paul II created the concept.

Its origins, according to the official World Youth Day website (www.madrid11.com), developed from various celebrations dedicated to youth during the Jubilee of 1983-84, called the Holy Year of Redemption in memory of the death of Jesus Christ.

WYD pilgrims' task: Help pope revive faith in Spain

Pope Benedict XVI will visit Spain in late August, celebrating the youthfulness and vigor of Catholic faith in a country where the Catholic majority often seems to have little or no impact on modern public life.

The primary focus on the pope's trip Aug. 18-21 will be on Catholic youths from around the globe participating in World Youth Day.
But Pope Benedict also will meet with Spain's royal family and with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, whose government has promoted several policies opposed by the church, including relaxing Spain's divorce laws, easing restrictions on abortion, legalizing same-sex marriage and allowing gay couples to adopt.

CRS provides emergency relief to drought-plagued East Africa

Five decades of experience in East Africa has helped Catholic Relief Services respond to the region’s growing drought crisis, affecting the countries of Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea and South Sudan.

Currently, CRS is providing emergency relief in this area known as the “Horn of Africa,” which is experiencing one of its worst droughts in 60 years.

St. Finbar organizes blood drive for school student

BURBANK — St. Finbar in Burbank will hold a blood drive for parish school student Matthew Fernandez on Aug. 7, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., at St. Finbar’s Community Center. The five-year-old was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on April 3 and is currently receiving treatment from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
