Capuchin Novices receive habit

On July 24, 22 men from the United States, Canada and Great Britain received the Capuchin Franciscan habit at the friary of San Lorenzo, in Santa Ynez. Father Frank Grinko, heading the formation team for the novitiate, blessed the habits which are part of the formal entrance of candidates into the Capuchin Order.

Ex-soldiers indicted in Spain for deaths of Salvador Jesuits surrender
SAN SALVADOR (CNS) — Nine former soldiers in El Salvador's army have surrendered to authorities, three months after their indictment in Spain for the 1989 killings of six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter during the country's 12-year civil war.

World Youth Day pilgrims receive special pre-trip blessing

On the first day of the week in which many local people will leave for Madrid, Spain, to attend World Youth Day, several pilgrims gathered at Sunday mid-morning Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels for a special blessing by Archbishop José Gomez.

More than 20 pilgrim chaperones, teenagers and young adults from throughout the archdiocese and also the San Bernardino Diocese attended the Aug. 7 liturgy in advance of the Aug. 16-21 WYD event, which is expected to draw a record number of youth from the United States. Currently 29,437 U.S. pilgrims are registered to attend, including 262 traveling from the L.A. Archdiocese.

Blessed Sacrament receives Parish Life Director

The first Parish Life Director at a Jesuit-sponsored parish was installed July 17 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Hollywood.

Auxiliary Bishop Edward Clark and Jesuit Father John McGarry, Provincial, concelebrated the installation Mass of Yolanda Scott Brown, DMin., before an assembly of nearly 1,000 people. Brown most recently served seven years as Pastoral Associate at Dolores Mission in Boyle Heights, also a Jesuit-administered parish in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

S.F. official proposes regulating crisis pregnancy centers

A San Francisco supervisor introduced legislation Aug. 2 aimed at stopping pro-life medical clinics from using "misleading advertising" in billboards and in pay-per-click Google ads that implies they offer abortion or abortion referrals.

The legislation is part of a campaign by NARAL Pro-Choice America to require crisis pregnancy centers to state up front that they do not provide abortions. The U.S. District Court ruled in January that Baltimore's ordinance violated pregnancy centers' right to free speech and the city of Baltimore has appealed.
