CAMARILLO --- "Religious and Catholic Peacebuilding: The Challenge of Peace Over 25 Years Later" is the theme for the 14th annual Eberhardt Lecture, scheduled Nov. 10, 7 p.m. at St. John's Seminary in Camarillo.
The lecture will be given by Dr. Maryann Cusimano Love, a professor of International Relations at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. A frequent contributor to America magazine, and the author of highly acclaimed children's books, Love will review the U.S. Bishops' 1983 pastoral letter on the ethics of war and the evangelical call for all Christians to be persons of peace.
On Nov. 16, "The Life and Legacy of Cardinal Timothy Manning" will be addressed in a 7:15 p.m. talk by Msgr. Clement Connolly, the cardinal's former priest-secretary and former pastor at Holy Family Church, South Pasadena.

Deacon information meeting set Nov. 15 at St. Basil
LOS ANGELES --- An information meeting for men interested in becoming a permanent deacon, sponsored by the Diaconate Formation Office, will be held Nov. 15, 1:30-4 p.m. at St. Basil Church, 637 S. LMU Kristallnacht event honors rescuers of Jewish children
LOS ANGELES --- The Jewish Studies program at Loyola Marymount University will host its annual Kristallnacht Commemoration Nov. 8, with a discussion titled "Shedding Light on Dark Times: The Rescue of Jewish Children." The event, sponsored by the "1939" Club, a Los Angeles-based organization of Holocaust survivors, will chronicle the heroic and often unsung efforts of many Europeans during World War II to rescue Jewish children from the Holocaust. Author and historian Suzanne Vromen of Bard College and actor-director Ron Marasco of LMU will be featured. The event begins at 1 p.m. in LMU's University Hall Atrium, 1 LMU Dr., Los Angeles.
Mount St. Mary's College hosts independent colleges gathering
LOS ANGELES --- Mount St. Mary's College hosted a record turnout of nearly 60 independent college presidents and provosts at the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities annual retreat Oct. 29-30, at its downtown Doheny campus. The retreat theme, "Capturing Opportunities During Challenging Financial Times," included presentations on the economic forecast for California and its implications for private higher education. Topics included: higher education enrollment projections for the state, financial aid challenges, transfer student opportunities, curricular innovations and demographic changes in the profile of college students. Jonathan Brown, AICCU president, said this was the first time provosts and chief academic officers were invited to the meeting, "and it proved to be very useful as they work closely with internal operations of their institutions."
Spirituality Day for parish leaders set in Ventura
VENTURA --- Jesuit Father Paul Coutinho, an Ignatioan scholar, retreat leader and author of "How Big Is Your God?", will present a day of spiritual renewal Nov. 13, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at San Buenaventura Mission, Ventura.
