Cathedral prepares for annual celebrations

With September at hand, a number of annual liturgical celebrations are planned at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

Sept. 7: Labor Day Mass
The annual Labor Day Mass at the Cathedral will be celebrated Sept. 7, 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, 555 W. Temple St., Los Angeles. Sept. 12: Mass and Festival of Cultures
The Archdiocese will celebrate the vibrant and diverse ethnic communities of Los Angeles at the annual Mass and Festival of Cultures on Sept. 12, 10 a.m. with Cardinal Roger Mahony presiding at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, 555 W. Temple St., Los Angeles. The Mass will include native songs and dances performed by various ethnic communities in their traditional dress.

"The Catholic Church recognizes cultural diversity as an important constitutive part of our society," said Auxiliary Bishop Oscar Solis, vicar for Ethnic Ministry. "Faithful from throughout the archdiocese gather each year to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of Los Angeles and to recognize the unique gifts each of our communities bring to our Local Church."

A Festival of Cultures immediately follows across from the Cathedral at the Los Angeles County Mall-Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration, featuring exhibits, performances, international food booths and other presentations from the diverse ethnic communities of Los Angeles. Sept. 13: Catechetical Commissioning
The annual Prayer of Commissioning, featuring the commissioning of catechetical leaders for parishes in the archdiocese, will take place Sept. 13, 3:30 p.m. at the Cathedral with Cardinal presiding. The event is sponsored by the Office of Religious Education. Information: (213) 637-7303.

Sept. 15: Catholic Prayer Breakfast
The 2009 Los Angeles Catholic Prayer Breakfast will be held Sept. 15 at the Cathedral, beginning at 6:30 a.m. with rosary led by the auxiliary bishops. Mass with Cardinal Mahony presiding begins at 7 a.m., followed by the breakfast with featured speaker Carl Anderson, supreme knight of the Knights of Columbus.

Breakfast tickets are $30. Anderson also will sign copies of his new book, "Our Lady of Guadalupe: Mother of the Civilization of Love," in the Cathedral Gift Shop after his talk. Information: (800) 838-1356 or visit www.catholicpb.com.
