'Summer with Benedicts' offers range of courses

text only version

The "Summer with the Benedicts" collection of summer classes continues into August with week-long classes addressing penance, mission and ministry to divorced persons, among others.

All are sponsored by the International Institute of Tribunal Studies, in collaboration with the Angelicum in Rome, Italy, and the Graduate Theological Foundation in Indiana. They may be taken toward degrees in canon law (Angelicum) or tribunal studies (Graduate Theological Foundation), as well as for personal enrichment.

"Penance, the Sacrament of Celebration" takes place Aug. 10-14 (9 a.m.-noon daily) at the Immaculate Heart Retreat Center in Los Angeles. Led by Father Andrew Umberg of St. William Church, Cincinnati, the course will provide an historical examination of the sacrament of penance. Students will have the opportunity to examine the history, theology and practice of this sacrament.

"Elements of Mission" will be led Aug. 10-14 (6:30-9:30 p.m. daily) at Immaculate Heart Retreat Center by Oblate of Mary Imamculate Father Ronald Young, professor at the University of St. Paul, Ottawa. The course is an introductory overview of the history and theology of the Christian mission from its earliest beginnings to the present.

It will include discussion of topics ranging from questions raised by interreligious dialogue, the ecumenical movement, and their relationship with modern approaches to missionary activity. It incorporates an emphasis on the analytical tools provided by cultural anthropology as an important aspect of the "inculturation of the faith."

"Submitting Ministers: Introduction and Training" will be led Aug. 10-15 at the IHM Retreat Center by Msgr. Charles Chaffman, archdiocesan judicial vicar, and the Tribunal staff. The course, said Msgr. Chaffman, "will familiarize participants with the various kinds of marriage cases encountered in parish ministry, and the pastoral challenges of ministering to persons with former marriages."

For information, contact Sister Rita J. Stuckey, IHM, at (213) 637-7275 or mailto:srrjstuckey@la-archdiocese.org. The course catalog is accessible at http://www.archdiocese.la/news/story.php?newsid=1086.
