Fr. Amengual, former Nativity
associate, dies

Funeral Mass will be celebrated June 29 at Nativity Church, Torrance, for Father Miguel Amengual, retired priest of the archdiocese, who died June 17 at age 89.

Born in Mallorca, Spain, Father Amengual was ordained in April, 1946, and began service in Los Angeles in 1974. He was incardinated for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in February 1985.

His service included associate pastorates at Nativity, Torrance; Our Lady of Guadalupe, Santa Barbara; La Purísima Concepción, Lompoc; and Our Lady of Guadalupe, El Monte. Her returned to Nativity in 1989, serving as associate and senior priest, then retired in 1998 and lived at Jeanne Jugan Residence in San Pedro.

A vigil will be celebrated June 28, 6:30 p.m. at Nativity, with the funeral Mass at 11 a.m. June 29. Burial will be at All Souls Cemetery, Long Beach.

Sr. Clemenza Finney, BVM
Funeral Mass was held recently for Sister of Charity Clemenza Finney, 84, who died June 13 in Dubuque, Iowa. She was a member of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary for 62 years.

An educator and counselor, Sister Finney taught locally at several high schools: St. Robert Bellarmine in Burbank (1949, 1952-63); Holy Family in Glendale (1949-52); and Maria del Mar in Santa Barbara (1965-69). She also taught in Missouri and was a high school counselor in Iowa for 30 years.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity, BVM Retirement Fund, 1100 Mt. Carmel Drive, Dubuque, Iowa 52003.

Sr. Marie William Cahill, OP
Funeral Mass was held June 15 at Queen of the Rosary Chapel in Sinsinawa, Wis., for Dominican Sister Marie William Cahill, who died June 11 at St. Dominic Villa, Sinsinawa. She had been a member of the Sinsinawa Dominicans for 74 years.

Sister Cahill's educational, administrative and pastoral ministries took her to states throughout the western U.S. Locally, she was the librarian at St. Thomas More School, Alhambra, from 1979-1982.

Memorials may be made to the Sinsinawa Dominicans, 585 County Road Z, Sinsinawa, WI, 53824-9701.

Fr. Edward Callanan, SJ
Funeral Mass was held June 17 at St. Ignatius Church, Sacramento for Jesuit Father Edward Callanan, 81, who died June 10 at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos.

A native of Los Angeles, Father Callanan attended Loyola High School, where he was an outstanding football player. He continued his football career for one year at the University of Southern California before entering the Jesuit novitiate at Los Gatos in 1945. He was ordained a priest at Blessed Sacrament Church in Hollywood in 1958.

Following graduate studies in Education at Fordham University, Father Callanan served as an administrator at Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix in the early 1960s and as principal of Jesuit High School in Sacramento until the mid-'70s. Locally, he ministered at Blessed Sacrament Church in Hollywood as an associate pastor and, later, as pastor from 1986-1990.

Since 2003, he served as assistant to the president for community relations. He is survived by a sister, Maryanne McNamara of Corona del Mar, and a brother, John of San Clemente.

James Halley
Funeral Mass was held June 10 in Boston for James Halley, 85, who died recently. Survivors include his son, Father James L. Halley, associate pastor of St. Anthony Church, Long Beach.

Alejandro Y. Chua
A Memorial Mass was held June 11 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Tujunga for Alejandro Y. Chua, who died June 3. Survivors include his wife, Virginia, and five sons, including Father Freddie Chua, pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Eleanor Martinez
Funeral Mass was held June 22 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Fillmore for Eleanor Martinez, who died June 16. Among family survivors are her husband, Manuel, and a son, Deacon Manny Martinez, FSP, director of deacons for the archdiocese. Condolence cards may be sent to Manuel A.
