'Makeover' designer honored as St. John Eudes Alumnus of the Year

Paige Huff Hemmis, a member of the design team on ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," was recently recognized by St. John Eudes School in Chatsworth as its "Alumnus of the Year" for 2008. A 1986 graduate from St. John Eudes, she received the award at the school's Endowment Trustee's Dinner April 12.

Hemmis was honored for her tireless spirit helping those in need and as an outstanding example of an alumna who has applied the principles learned in a Catholic school to her work. Her volunteer activities include supporting community projects that benefit the poor and homeless.

She attended Chaminade College Preparatory and holds degrees in both psychology and theology from UC Santa Barbara. In addition to her work on network television, she is an author, a clothing designer and a spokesperson for Habitat for Humanity.

St. Cyril eighth grade actress recognized

Kira Burri, an eighth grader at St. Cyril of Jerusalem School in Encino, was among 170 young actors recognized for their scholarship, community work and acting abilities at Universal Studios on April 13.

One of the original L.A. cast members of the American Girls Revue at The American Girl Place at the Grove in Los Angeles, Burri performed the role of "Katie," who danced and sang stories about "Kirsten," an 1864 Scandinavian immigrant to the Midwest, and "Kit," a girl growing up in the 1934 depression.

When not performing, Burri is active in community service work. After a day of volunteering at the Painted Turtle Camp for sick children, she started a drive to collect family entertainment videos for the campers to watch while undergoing lengthy medical procedures such as dialysis.

Members of Louisville's golf team, achieving the highest average GPA among all girls' golf teams in CIF-Southern Section with enrollment under 1500, were honored at a pre-game ceremony at the April 29 Angels baseball game at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. Other top winning teams in the CIF-SS Academic Awards Program included Louisville's cross country team (2nd) and its soccer team (3rd).

Five other teams at Louisville ranking high in the academic competition included the softball team (6th), tennis and basketball teams (7th), track team (9th) and water polo team (12th). Seven of Louisville's teams rank 1st among the Mission League schools and among all Catholic high schools in the CIF-SS Academic Awards Program.
