Fr. John Brennan, SJ
A Memorial Mass was held Feb. 25 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Los Angeles for Jesuit Father John J. Brennan, 93, who died Feb. 11. Father Brennan, who spent 30 years as a missionary in China, served the Blessed Sacrament parish community for 34 years.

Born in San Francisco, he was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1946. Following his three-decade ministry in China, he began serving as an associate pastor at Blessed Sacrament Church in 1969.

"Father John was one of the most pastoral people I've ever met. He was always willing to do anything to help people," said Jesuit Father Michael Mandala, pastor of Blessed Sacrament. In remembrance of Father Brennan's fondness for gardening around the parish, the parish is establishing a John Brennan Memorial Garden Fund. Burial was at Santa Clara Cemetery.

Sr. Marcella Glosemeyer, SSND
Funeral Mass was held March 19 at St. John of God Retirement Center for School Sister of Notre Dame Marcella Glosemeyer (Sister August Marie), 90, who died March 17 from complications of pneumonia.

Born in Washington, Missouri, she entered the congregation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1938. She earned a bachelor's degree in applied music from Quincy College, Quincy, Illinois, in 1953 and a master's degree in elementary education in 1976 from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, Illinois.

Sister Glosemeyer ministered in education for 50 years at schools in California, Illinois and Missouri. Locally, she taught at St. Hillary in Pico Rivera from 1973-83. She served as a librarian at two L.A. schools: Loyola High School from 1983-1990 and Christ the King from 1992-2003.

Burial was at Resurrection Cemetery in South San Gabriel. Memorial contributions may be made to the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Resource Development, 320 E. Ripa Ave., St. Louis, Mo., 63125-2897.

Sr. Elizabeth Mitchelson, RSHM
Funeral Mass was held Feb. 27 at Holy Family Church in Wilmington for Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary Sister Elizabeth Mitchelson, 70, who died recently.

Born in Wilbur, California, one of six girls, she attended St. Benedict School and Sacred Heart of Mary High School, Montebello, before entering the novitiate in Santa Barbara. She received a BA in history from Marymount College as well as an elementary school credential.

Locally, she taught at St. Patrick School in North Hollywood and, in her later years, she was a volunteer teacher at several schools, including St. Margaret Mary School, Lomita; Holy Trinity School, San Pedro; and Holy Family School, Wilmington. Before her volunteer teaching stints, she served for 14 years at Marymount College, Palos Verdes, in the health and food centers.

According to her religious community, Sister Mitchelson was known for her graciousness, spirit of giving, creative and artistic ability, her great love of children and her tremendous faith in the power of prayer. Surviving family members include her sisters: Pat Lind, Betty Campano and Judy Kolb and their families as well as her many nieces and nephews.

Sr. Elizabeth Hurley, DC
A Memorial Mass was held March 15 in the Maryvale Chapel in Rosemead for Daughter of Charity Sister Elizabeth Hurley, who died Feb. 27.

Born in Oakland, she was put into an orphanage at the age of six following the death of her mother. She became acquainted with the Daughters of Charity as a young teenager after moving to the religious community's orphanage in San Francisco.

Sister Hurley entered the Daughters of Charity in 1931. Ten years later, she came to the Los Angeles Orphan Asylum in Boyle Heights to work in the kitchen. In 1948, she became moderator of a new Daughters of Charity auxiliary fundraising group: the Ladies of Charity. The Ladies grew to number several hundred women throughout Southern California while Sister Hurley served for decades as their moderator. She stepped down in the early 1990s only when ill health made it impossible for her to continue.

Besides her "day job" of overseeing the kitchen at Maryvale and moderating the Ladies of Charity, Sister Hurley helped to resettle Cuban and Vietnamese refugees who came to southern California. Following the fall of Saigon to the communists in 1975, she visited Camp Pendleton several times a week to help find sponsors and housing for the Vietnamese temporarily housed there. Donations may be made in Sister Hurley's memory to Maryvale's capital building fund for family outreach programs.
