Joan and Tony Vienna receive papal honors

text only version

Cardinal Roger Mahony congratulated Joan and Tony Vienna on receiving a distinguished papal honor, the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal, on March 4. Since 1992, Joan Vienna has directed the archdiocesan Office of Family Life, and since 2002 she has directed the archdiocesan Office of Safeguard the Children from its inception. In that role, she has spearheaded efforts throughout the archdiocese to form Safeguard the Children Parish Committees and to train thousands of adults in the prevention of child sexual abuse. Her husband Tony was also recognized for his steadfast support. Cardinal Mahony praised the Viennas for their "total commitment" and lauded Joan for her leadership in ensuring that the archdiocese is in compliance with the U.S. Bishops' Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.
