Bishop Montgomery, St. Mary's win basketball titles

Bishop Montgomery High School of Torrance and St. Mary's Academy of Inglewood captured California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section championships in last weekend's basketball playoffs.

Bishop Montgomery (24-6), led by Cobbs, Ware and Panaggio, defeated Ontario Colony, 60-45, for the boys' Division II-AA crown. The Knights --- earning their fourth title under coach Doug Mitchell, and fifth overall --- advanced in the state tournament after beating University City of San Diego March 4.

St. Mary's (25-7) won the girls' IV-AA title over Bellarmine-Jefferson (25-6) of Burbank, 70-38. The winners were led by Yashontwa Redmond scored 17 points, Shasidy Ludgood 15 and Keyaira Hamilton 10, and Talia Rayford had 13 rebounds. Coached by Bo Corona, the Belles then defeated Bishop's of La Jolla in the first round of the state tournament March 4.
