| Franciscan Father James Goode will serve as the homilist for the fifth annual Black History Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m. 
Known as the "Dean of Black Catholic Preachers," Father Goode is pastoral director of Solid Ground, a Franciscan ministry with African American families based in New York City. He is also the founder and president of the National Black Catholic Apostolate for Life.
The principal celebrant will be Auxiliary Bishop Oscar Solis, vicar of Ethnic Ministries in the archdiocese.
A component of the Black History Month Celebration is the presentation of the Daniel Rudd "Keeper of the Flame" Award to lay people who have provided leadership to the Los Angeles African American community. The 2008 honorees are Jean Lawrence, Harry L. Wiley, Jr. and Emily Lewis. The award is given by the African American Catholic Center for Evangelization, which sponsors the annual Mass.
