All Souls School Children's Garden to be dedicated
Students from All Souls School in Alhambra have storytime in the new St. Joseph Children's Meditation Garden recently created behind the school. The garden of lush grass and plants will be officially dedicated Jan. 27 following the 10:30 a.m. Mass, commencing All Souls' Catholic Schools Week celebrations. The new garden and recently installed potted palm trees in front of the school represent the first phase of a parish beautification and restoration project spearheaded by Father Modesto Perez, pastor.
'A Celebration of Life' benefits Pregnancy Help Center
The Auxiliary of the Pregnancy Help Center of San Gabriel Valley hosts "A Celebration of Life" luncheon on Feb. 21 at Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center in Sierra Madre.
Retired Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Sartoris will be the featured speaker, with Mass at 10:30 a.m. followed by the luncheon.
Proceeds from the luncheon will support the Pregnancy Help Center (PHC) of San Gabriel Valley in Temple City. The PHC offers a variety of services for women who suspect or know they are pregnant and have financial or emotional obstacles to a happy pregnancy.
The center offers free ultra-sounds, to qualified clients, by a certified nurse sonographer, as well as free pregnancy tests. In addition, clients may obtain supplies --- such as diapers, wipes and toddler clothing --- on a monthly basis.

Alhambra Knights celebrate a milestone
The Alhambra Council of the Knights of Columbus recently celebrated its 85th Anniversary with a gala banquet at Monterey Hill Restaurant in Monterey Park.
Pastor Paul Menke from St. Thomas More Church in Alhambra (one of the churches served by the council) congratulated the Knights for their years of service. Also speaking were representatives of several of council's charitable partners, including the Wheelchair Foundation, Marian Homes and Five Acres.
Other speakers included James Baker, Jr., president of the San Gabriel Valley Chapter of the Knights of Columbus; District Deputy Gary Ganibi who represented California State Deputy James Scroggin; and Alhambra City Councilman Steven Placido.
Afterward, a video slideshow presented the history of the council and then guests enjoyed a "raffle-style" give-away of donated door prizes.
"We were very pleased with the turn out," said Dean Smith, Deputy Grand Knight and event coordinator. "We would also like to thank our sponsors for helping to make the event a success."

'Nights of Discipleship' to be at St. Andrew
The Office for Vocations is sponsoring a series of evening sessions at parishes throughout the archdiocese, including St. Andrew Church in Pasadena, for young single men and women who are considering a religious life.
These "Nights of Discipleship" feature prayer, presentation and discussion of "How am I a disciple of Jesus Christ and where do I, as a disciple, fit into the Catholic Church?"

Organ concert set Jan. 27 at St. Dorothy
As part of the parish's ongoing golden anniversary celebration in 2008, St. Dorothy Church in Glendora will hold an organ concert on Jan. 27, 1 p.m. featuring musical selections from parish organist Tom Bartke.
Unlike traditional pipe organs, St. Dorothy's organ is a digital organ, created by the Allen Organ Company, and capable of replicating almost any musical sound.

'True Feminism' classes offered
Carmelite Sister Catherine Marie will present an overview of the teachings and writings of Pope John Paul II on women at St. Joseph's Center in Alhambra.
