Simbang Gabi celebrations begin Dec. 15

The local celebration of Simbang Gabi begins Dec. 15, 6 p.m at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels with the first of a Novena of Masses.

"I was a stranger and you welcomed me!" ("Ako'y isang dayuhan na inyong kinupkop") is the theme for this year's celebration, said Good Shepherd Sister Christina Sevilla, director of Filipino Ministry in the archdiocese.

"This year, with the immigration issue that is still very much hotly debated on we have chosen a Scripture text from the Gospel of St. Matthew [25: 35], with the hope that we see in each person --- regardless of status, sex, race, color, religion --- Jesus Himself who entered our human world as a Divine Stranger," said Sister Sevilla.

The complete schedule of Simbang Gabi celebrations in the archdiocese will appear in the Dec. 14 issue of the Tidings. For information, call (323) 662-8480.
