Holy Trinity wins 2007 CYO football championship
With 1:42 remaining at the storied Rose Bowl, Holy Trinity School of San Pedro scored two come-from-behind touchdowns to claim the 2007 CYO flag football title Nov. 18 with a 26-20 victory over American Martyrs School of Manhattan Beach.
The title is the Chargers' third football championship in five years and eighth overall. The winning touchdown was set up when Eamon McOsker deflected a pass that teammate Blake Mendoza intercepted and return 40 yards.
Quarterback Ken Potter connected with Mike Whitt for the winning touchdown with one second left on the clock to seal the victory. Said CYO program director John Mueller, "The game is already being called the greatest in CYO history. Both teams played their hearts out!"
The game was played before an enthusiastic crowd of 1,500 in Pasadena. In the consolation contest, St. Rita of Sierra Madre avenged its only regular season loss with a victory over St. Louise de Marillac of Covina.
Holy Trinity finished the season was 36-1. Their only loss was in September to American Martyrs. The Chargers won the CYO South Bay League with a 9-0 record and also took first place in the prestigious Notre Dame High School Tournament. DMJ jubilarians celebrated
The Daughters of Mary and Joseph in Rancho Palos Verdes recently honored two jubilarians: Sister Teresa Josephine Cotter, 70 years a religious, and Sister Nuala Briody, 50 years.
Mass at the Mary and Joseph Retreat Center chapel was followed by an evening meal with family, friends and community members - giving thanks to God for their long lives and fruitful ministries.
Sister Cotter, now retired, taught at parochial and public schools for more than 60 years. Sister Briody has also taught and worked in pastoral ministry in Los Angeles and Orange counties. She is currently serving on the leadership team of the DMJ community.
St. Margaret Mary hosts community gathering of song and culture
"A December to Remember," a community gathering to participate in the song, dance and performances of various cultural backgrounds and tradition in the spirit Christmas, will be presented Dec. 14 at St. Margaret Mary Church in Lomita.
The 7-9 p.m. gathering is sponsored by the parish Community Building Formation. The parish, which recently celebrated its 70th anniversary with a series of events, is located at 25511 Eshelman Ave., Lomita. For information, call (310) 326-3364.
Mary & Joseph Retreat Center hosts holiday happenings
As part of its Dinner and a Movie program, Mary & Joseph Retreat Center will present "The Nativity Story" Sunday, Dec. 9. Appetizers begin at 4 p.m. followed by dinner at 4:30. The movie starts at 6 p.m. Cost is $17 per person, $12 children 4-12, children under 4 are free.
The retreat center will also host a collection of crèches from around the world viewing Dec. 10-20; an Advent day of prayer, led by Father Alexander Lewis, on Dec. 15 (9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., $55); and a holiday tea and carols Dec. 16 (1:30 p.m., $15 adults, $10 children).
