Cathedral events to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels (555 W. Temple St., Los Angeles) will once again host a series of events in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Latino Theater Company will present "La Virgen de Guadalupe, Dios Inantzin" Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. The play, presented in Spanish and Nahautl, the language of the Aztecs, dramatizes the four appearances of the Virgin Mary to St. Juan Diego and celebrates the Mexican community's indigenous heritage and deep religious traditions in music, song and dance.

On Dec. 9 the official unveiling of the new murals at the Shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe takes place following the 12:30 p.m. Mass. The murals by Cathedral artist Lalo Garcia depict the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to St. Juan Diego in 1531.

The Dec. 12 Feast Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe begins at 4:40 a.m. with a procession of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe through the Cathedral Plaza accompanied by Aztec dancers. Once inside the Cathedral, the traditional "Maņanitas" begin at 5 a.m., featuring mariachi, the Cathedral Choir and noted soloists. Mass will be celebrated in Spanish at 5:45 a.m. by Cardinal Roger Mahony.

Aztec dancers will perform special traditional dances in honor of Our Lady during the liturgy and on the Cathedral Plaza throughout the day. There will also be Mass in English at 7 a.m. and a bilingual (Spanish/English) Mass at 12:10 p.m. The day's festivities conclude with a "Nochesitas" Mass in Spanish at 7 p.m. Information: (213) 680-5200.
