Advent and Christmas Holy Days

text only version

The following advisory on Advent and Christmas Holy Day celebrations has been issued from the archdiocesan Office for Worship:

Immaculate Conception: The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is a holy day of obligation, even when it falls on a Saturday or Monday, because Mary is honored under this title as the patroness of the United States.

Masses of the Immaculate Conception may be celebrated Friday evening, Dec. 7, and during the day on Saturday, Dec. 8. The evening Mass on Saturday, Dec. 8 is a vigil Mass for the Second Sunday of Advent, Dec. 9.

Our Lady of Guadalupe: The feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Wednesday, Dec. 1 2, is not a holy day of obligation in the United States, even though we honor Mary as the patroness of the Americas under this title.

Mary, Mother of God: The Octave Day of Christmas and feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Jan. 1, is not a holy day of obligation in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and in the other dioceses of the Los Angeles Province (Orange, San Bernardino, Monterey, Fresno and San Diego). Parishes are encouraged to schedule Masses on this day for the benefit of those parishioners who wish to participate on this feast day.
