Fr. Paul Gelencser, O.Praem
Funeral Mass was held Oct. 10 at St. Michael's Abbey in Silverado for Norbertine Father Paul Gelencser, one of seven founding fathers of St. Michael's Abbey in Orange, who died Oct. 7.

A native of Austria, he was ordained a priest in 1941 in Hungary, where he taught at Catholic schools and, in 1948, became assistant pastor of the Abbey Church in Csorna during Communist suppression of Catholic-run schools.

In 1950, Fr. Gelencser joined his confreres in fleeing the Communist regime and headed to Austria, later joining fellow exiled priests in Rome for three months. Answering his superiors' call to reestablish community life in the U.S., he served in Philadelphia and then St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisc.

In 1957, Fr. Gelencser began a long teaching career at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana in 1957, serving until 1980 as a "demanding yet merciful" teacher of German and Latin, according to former students. In 1980, he was assigned to then St. Michael's Priory where he taught Latin to the seminarians until ill health forced him to retire from teaching in 1999. Interment was at Ascension Cemetery in Lake Forest.

Compton Blvd., Rancho Dominguez, CA 90220-1198.
