Labor Day Mass: Sept. 3
The annual archdiocesan Labor Day Mass will take place Sept. 3 at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, 555. W. Temple St. in Los Angeles. Cardinal Roger Mahony will preside at the liturgy which offers "an opportunity to stand with workers from throughout the archdiocese as we celebrate their victories and pray for them in their struggles," said Auxiliary Bishop Oscar Solis, director of the archdiocesan Office of Justice and Peace.
Among the issues to be highlighted are workers' rights, including the right to organize; legalization and the right to higher education for immigrant families; universal healthcare; and affordable housing. For more information, call the Office of Justice and Peace at (213) 637-7690.
Cathedral's 5th anniversary and art exhibit: Sept. 8
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will celebrate a special Mass Sept. 8 at 5 p.m. to commemorate the Cathedral's fifth anniversary. Following the Mass, everyone is invited to the Plaza for cake.
As part of the anniversary celebration, the Cathedral Fine Arts Committee will present "Looking Back, Moving Forward," a new fine arts exhibition featuring new original work by Cathedral artists. The exhibit is a reflection on what the last five years have meant to the artists and their art. The exhibit opens Sept. 8 and runs through Jan. 4 in the Cathedral Chapels. Contributing artists include Lita Albuquerque, Johnny Bear Contreras, Max DeMoss, Lalo Garcia, Robert Graham, Frank Martinez, John Nava and John August Swanson.
Cuban Masses: Sept. 8 and Sept. 16
The Cuban faith community of Los Angeles will celebrate its annual Mass in honor of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, patroness of Cuba, on Sept. 8, 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Church, 11901 Acacia Ave., Hawthorne. The main celebrant will be Father Marcos Gonzalez.
Later in the month, Cuban-native Auxiliary Bishop Octavio Cisneros of Brooklyn will celebrate Mass with the Cuban community Sept. 16, 12:30 p.m. at Holy Family Church, 209 E. Lomita Ave. in Glendale. The parish's statue of Our Lady of Charity will be blessed. Following the liturgy, there will be a reception and a one-and-a-half hour film shown on the life of Father Félix Varela.
Bishop Cisneros serves as vice postulator for the sainthood cause of Father Varela, a 19th-century Cuban priest who supported Cuban independence from Spain. Father Varela lived in exile for many years in the United States ministering for some 35 years to the Irish immigrant community in New York City. He died in Florida in 1853. Bishop Cisneros also will talk about Father Varela's life as source of inspiration for Cubans in the Diaspora.
'Building Bridges' Young Adult Summit: Sept. 15
The San Fernando Pastoral Region Ministry with Young Adults invites young adults to the "Building Bridges" Young Adult Summit Sept. 15. The leadership training and networking day will include presentations on how to run an effective young adult ministry and how to build bridges among young adults. San Fernando Region Auxiliary Bishop Gerald Wilkerson will offer opening remarks.
The 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. summit takes place at Bishop Alemany High School, 11111 N. Alemany Dr., Mission Hills. Pre-registration by Sept. 7 is $12 a person, or $8 per person for groups of five or more. On-site registration is $15 a person. Financial assistance is available if needed. Metropolitan Tribunal to offer adult faith education courses
The archdiocesan Office of Metropolitan Tribunal is offering 15-week courses in New Testament studies, philosophy, moral theology and basic Latin. The courses are:
---"Introduction to the New Testament," taught by Dr. William Shaules Thursdays beginning Oct. 11 from 3-6 p.m. at the Archdiocesan Catholic Center (ACC) in Los Angeles.
---"Survey of Philosophy," with attention to the role of reason and faith in contemporary Catholic thought, taught by Dr. Alan Vincelette Saturdays starting Oct. 13, 8:30-10:30 a.m. at St. John's Seminary in Camarillo.
---"Catholic Fundamental Moral Theology," taught by Dr. Vincelette, Saturdays starting Oct. 13, 10:30 a.m.-noon at St. John's Seminary.
---"Basic Latin, Part I," taught by Notre Dame Sister Mary Joanne Wittenburg Tuesdays beginning Oct. 9, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the ACC.
Msgr. Charles Chaffman, judicial vicar, said the courses represent an effort to enable people who may not be able to attend institutes of higher education to realize their dreams of working toward a college degree.
Auditing is $100 per course, or $150 for any two courses. For credit towards a Bachelor in Theology through the International Institute of Tribunal Studies and the Graduate Theological Foundation, the fee is $500. For more information, contact Msgr. Youth Employment Recognition Awards: Sept. 27
"Building Tomorrow's Leaders," the 13th annual Alumni and Employer Recognition Awards Dinner, will take place Sept. 27 at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel. Sponsored by the Archdiocesan Youth Employment Services, the event honors participants and supporters of programs that enable youth to receive jobs, training and mentoring as they embark on careers.
