Catholics in public life to be discussed at St. Bernardine talk
How should our moral values affect our electoral considerations? Kristin E. Heyer, Ph.D., assistant professor of Christian Ethics at Loyola Marymount University, will address this question and other issues relating to public theology in her talk Sept. 6, 7:30 p.m. at St. Bernardine of Siena Church, Woodland Hills.

The author of "Prophetic and Public: The Social Witness of U.S. Catholicism," published by Georgetown University Press in 2006, Dr. Heyer teaches social ethics and recognizes religion as a legitimate and potentially positive force in public life.

Beginning Sept. 13, 7:30 p.m., Franciscan Father Doug Glassman will start his four-week series on "The Western Church in the Middle Ages, 700-1500 C.E." During the mini-course based on the book, "Western Society and the Church in the Middle Ages" by R. W. Southern, Father Glassman will present an exploration of what it was like to live in a society where the "sacred" and the "secular" were intimately intertwined on both the social and political level.

The Thursday night classes will be held in St. Bernardine's parish center, 24410 Calvert St., Woodland Hills. Information is available at (818) 888-8200.

Louisville softball star makes a hit (and then some) at Penn

The honor capped a string of awards this year for Kinsey, a 2004 graduate of the Woodland Hills High School. She was also named to the 2007 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region team and was a unanimous pick for Ivy League Player of the Year.

Her academic honors include being named Academic All-Ivy and chosen for the Philadelphia Inquirer/CoSIDA Academic All-Area Softball Team.
