Notre Dame de Namur Sisters celebrate milestones of service

Santa Barbara Region
text only version

Four Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur with ties to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles were among 12 Jubilarians at a Mass of Thanksgiving Aug. 12, on the campus of Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont. Collectively, these Sisters have educated tens of thousands of children throughout California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii.

Celebrating 70 years is Sister Marie Elise McCormick, who comes from a long line of teachers, and was particularly fond of her time at Dolores School in Santa Barbara. Later she became a nurse and for 18 years cared for the infirm Sisters at Notre Dame Infirmary in Saratoga. She now assists in the Province Center finance office.

Sister Marie Annette Burkart, a 50-year jubilarian, enjoyed a teaching career that spanned assignments in elementary schools from Marysville to Los Angeles to Hawaii. She also taught in the Music Department of College of Notre Dame (now Notre Dame de Namur University) and was director of liturgy at St. Joseph's Cathedral in San Jose. Currently she is involved in vocations ministry.

Golden jubilarian Sister Giovannina Fazio ("Sister Nena") taught in elementary schools from Marysville to Santa Barbara. She also served in parish ministry in northern California, taught religious education at USF, and worked at the Bethsaida Family Home in Redwood City, where "we helped abused and immigrant women and their children become self-sufficient." Currently she is a health care assistant for the Sisters.

Sister Carol (Mary Matthew) Kenning, a 50-year jubilarian, taught in schools in California and Hawaii, primarily in high schools, but also at College of Notre Dame and served there as assistant dean. A decade ago, knowing of the tremendous needs of low-income, immigrant students and their families, she chose to teach sixth grade at St. Columbkille School in South Los Angeles. She continues now to help teachers prepare their religion classes and prayer services for the children.
