Obituaries: Sr. Joan Mc Kay, MM

text only version

Funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 8 in Ossining, N.Y., for Maryknoll Sister Joan McKay, who died Aug. 5 at the Maryknoll Sisters Residential Care Unit in Ossining. She was 86 years of age and had been a Maryknoll Sister for 67 years.

Born in San Francisco, she entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1940 and received the religious name Sister Mary Margaret Ann. Sister McKay worked for the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, was assistant procurator in the Maryknoll Sisters Convent in San Francisco (1950-62), and directed the purchasing department at the Motherhouse in Maryknoll, N.Y. (1962-69).

In 1969 she was assigned to the Maryknoll Sisters Hospital in Monrovia. When the Maryknoll Sisters closed the facility as a hospital, it became the Maryknoll Sisters Retirement House in 1971, and Sister McKay continued on staff as bookkeeper. While in Monrovia, she was a member of the U.S. Western Region and served as coordinator of the regional governing board for the Western Region from 1985 to 1988.

Failing health led to her assignment at the Maryknoll Sisters Residential Care in 2003 where she remained until her death. She is survived by a sister, Mary Becker, of Danville, Calif., two nieces and a sister-in-law.

Fr. John G. Parish
A memorial Mass for Father John Gerald Parish, who died July 22, will be celebrated Aug. 10, 10 a.m. at Mary Star of the Sea Church, Oxnard, where his father, Deacon Harold Parish, serves. As reported Aug. 3, Father Parish, ordained for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 1984, was incardinated to the Diocese of Raleigh, N.C., in 1996 and was pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Church, Wake Forest, at the time of his death.

Jesus Martinez
Funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 3 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church (Hammel Street), East Los Angeles, for Jesus Martinez, who died recently. He was the father of Deacon Jesus Martinez, who serves the parish. Interment was at Resurrection Cemetery, Montebello.
