Sr. Mary Martin Bush, OP
Funeral Mass was held July 4 for Dominican Sister Mary Martin Bush, 97, who died July 2 at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse in Fremont. She was a Dominican Sister for 71 years.
Born in Redding, Calif., her principal active ministry for over 64 years was education and, at various sites, community leadership and administration. She served at a number of schools in California and Oregon.
In Southern California, she taught at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, La Caņada-Flintridge; Sacred Heart High School, Los Angeles; and Saint Catherine's Military Academy, Anaheim.

Deacon Gilbert Lanoix
Funeral Mass was held July 19 at St. Brigid Church in Los Angeles for Deacon Gilbert Lanoix, who died July 3. He was a member of the Ordination Class of 1979.

Deacon John Mecozzi
Funeral Mass was held July 9 at Blessed Junipero Serra Church in Camarillo for Deacon John Mecozzi, who died July 3. Deacon Mecozzi was a member of the Ordination Class of 1998.
Sr. Margaret Mary McSweeney, OP
Funeral Mass was held July 9 for Dominican Sister Margaret Mary McSweeney, 76, who died July 5 at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse in Fremont.
A Dominican Sister for 58 years, she ministered primarily as a teacher. In Los Angeles, she taught at Santa Teresita, Saint Ignatius, and Sacred Heart Elementary and High Schools. Sister McSweeney also was on the teaching staff at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, La Caņada/Flintridge; and San Gabriel Mission High School, San Gabriel.

Sr. Mary Rice, SSL
Funeral Mass was held recently at St. Mel Church in Woodland Hills for Sister of St. Louis Mary Rice (Sister Mary Eamon), who died May 18. She was a Sister of St. Louis for 67 years.
Born in County Tyrone, Ireland, she entered the Sisters of St. Louis in 1940 and came to California in 1951. For over 28 years, Sister Rice was a teacher and/or principal in the following archdiocesan schools: St. Cyprian, Long Beach; St. Bede, La Caņada/Flintridge; St. Louis of France, La Puente; and Bishop Amat High School, La Puente.
In her retirement years, Sister Rice ministered to homeless women in Los Angeles and volunteered at the Braille Institute. Survivors include her sister, Sister of St. Louis Kathleen Rice; sister-in-law, Angela Rice; and many nieces and nephews. Mary Elaine Dunn, IHM
Funeral Mass was held July 6 at All Souls Chapel at Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles for Mary Elaine Dunn, a member of the Immaculate Heart Community for 66 years who died on July 1.
Dunn served as a teacher and principal in many parochial schools in Northern and Southern California. According to her community members, she was beloved by those who worked with her as fair, highly competent, fun-loving and spirit-filled.
She cared for her aging parents in the family home for many years and served as a surrogate daughter to the many frail elderly in her neighborhood. She was famous for never saying no to any vagrant car.
Survivors include her sister-in-law, Mary Dunn; nephews Brian and Larry Dunn; niece Anne Kellenberger; cousin Julie Friese, IHM; and two grandnieces and grandnephews. Memorial donations may be made to the Immaculate Heart Community.
Sr. Christina Gibbons, SSL
Funeral Mass was held recently at St. Louis of France Church in La Puente for Sister of St. Louis Christina Gibbons (Sister Aelred), who was killed in a car accident close to her convent home in West Covina on June 11. She was a Sister of St. Louis for 58 years.
Born in Westport, County Mayo, Ireland, she came to California in 1952. For the past 55 years, she has ministered as a teacher or principal in the following archdiocesan schools: Corpus Christi, Pacific Palisades; St. Cyprian, Long Beach; St. Louis of France, La Puente; and St. Bede, La Caņada.
Survivors include her sisters, Sister of St. Louis Agnellus Gibbons and Mrs. Sheila Gunning and many extended family members and friends.
Sr. Corinne Habersetzer, OSF
Funeral Mass was held July 3 at the Marian Residence Chapel in Santa Maria for Sister of St. Francis Corinne Habersetzer (Joyce Imelda), 90, who died June 27. She was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity for 69 years.
Born in Portland, Oregon, she attended St. Mary's Academy near Toledo, Washington. After working for two years following graduation, she joined the community of the Sisters of St. Francis who had taught her for 12 years at the Academy.
Sister Habersetzer taught on the East Coast initially, and then moved west where she ministered at schools staffed by the Sisters of St. Francis. Locally, she served as principal at St. Mary of the Assumption, Santa Maria (1966-67), and later was principal at St. Rita in Sierra Madre and Annunciation in Arcadia.
After retiring from teaching, she moved to the Marian Residence in Santa Maria in 2003 where she ministered as sacristan in the chapel. According to her community members, "her cheerful attitude was always a source of joy for those around her."

Sr. Mary Annrita Martin, SND
Funeral Mass was held June 26 for Sister of Notre Dame Mary Annrita (Veronica Martin), who died June 21 in the health care center of the provincial house of the Sisters of Notre Dame in Thousand Oaks.
Born in Cleveland, she was an elementary school teacher and administrator in Ohio and Washington, D.C., for nearly 35 years. In 1969, she moved to California where she began her ministry at St. Joan of Arc School in Los Angeles. For the next 20 years, Sister Martin taught in both elementary and secondary schools until she retired to the Provincial Center in 1990.
During her later years, she corresponded with many international friends, including the religious sisters at St. Julie's School in Buseesa, Uganda. Survivors include her brother, Robert Martin, of Cherry Hill, N.J., and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Burial took place at Assumption Cemetery, Simi Valley. |
