100 Years Ago: 1907

July 5: An extended article details the commencement exercise at Immaculate Heart College. Besides the list of musical renditions, the entire speech (and full length photo) of valedictorian Lilian Reginald Whalen is included on "The Crown of Womanhood," received with prolonged applause.

July 12: Two full pages record entire speech that Bishop Conaty delivered to the National Education Association and "holds vast audience of pedagogues until the final word is spoken."

July 19: Among the many ads displayed is one from the J.W. Robinson Company listing bathing suits for the youngsters: "Cutest little bathing suits for small girls and boys ever brought to this coast, knitted wool suits for those 2 to 6 years, $1.25 and skirt-and-bloomer suits of flannels trimmed with braids for girls, 8 to 16 years, $2.50."

July 26: Herman J. Rodman, The Tidings editor, dies suddenly after ailing for the past few weeks. He was the manager-in-chief for a year and was a convert to the Catholic religion. The paper added, "We trust that he has found that peace which knows no interruption."

50 Years Ago: 1957

July 5: Hurricane Audrey hits southwest Louisiana, destroying many churches as the death toll reaches into the thousands…. Nine Lay Mission-Helpers leave for mission assignments in Africa to join seven Angelenos already serving there.

July 12: Al Antczak, Tidings reporter, writes a front page story of his flight and stay in Mexico City…. Mother Regina is re-elected as Mother General of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart at the general chapter with Cardinal James Francis McIntyre presiding.

July 19: City, county, state and church leaders attend gala event at the Biltmore to honor Joe Scott, "Mr. Los Angeles," on his 90th birthday. Msgr. George Scott, his son, reads a congratulatory telegram from the Vatican.

July 26: Film review column lauds "An Affair to Remember" as good romantic adult fare, saying, "The quality of genuineness is never lost through the masterful performances of Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr."
