Our Lady of Victory court celebrates anniversary
Court Our Lady of Victory #1344 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas celebrated its 65th anniversary recently by honoring charter member-sisters for their steadfast support at a banquet at St. James Church, Redondo Beach.
Founded in May 1942, the South Bay court has supported seminarians, orphans, feed-the-hungry programs, Habitat for Humanity, a Ronald McDonald house, a maritime workers' chaplain, U.S. Navy "Project Handclasp" disaster relief fund, an elder-care facility in Salinas and Smile Train's cleft palate services.
"It is no small effort keeping an organization functioning through wars, cultural changes and varied distractions in family life," said regent Gude Floratos.
St. Anthony principal retires
A June 17 Mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Gardena will honor Sister Ann Stouffer, who is retiring as principal of St. Anthony of Padua School. The Sister of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, a principal the last 19 years, is the last in her religious community to staff St. Anthony's.
The 3 p.m. Mass will be followed by a dinner at 5 p.m. Tickets for the dinner are $25 and can be purchased weekdays at the school's office (1003 W. 163rd St.).
Ministry Formation course offered in Long Beach
The Los Angeles Archdiocese's Office of Religious Education is sponsoring a "Ministry Formation Course" at St. Bartholomew Church in Long Beach (5100 E. Broadway) on Wednesday evenings (through July 25, 7-10 p.m.) and Saturdays (June 16, 30 and July 21, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.).
The course will fulfill basic requirements of the theological phase for those pursuing certification as a catechist (early childhood through adults), youth ministry and Confirmation team member, initiation team member and liturgical minister. Others seeking adult enrichment are welcome to attend.
Topics covered include: images of God, Scripture and revelation, Jesus, church, sacrament, liturgy, morality, social justice, prayer and spirituality. Information: Ted or Kathleen Flood, (562) 434-3163.
Serra students earn essay awards
Two students at Junipero Serra High School were winners in this spring's City of Gardena's City Clerks Essay Contest. First place honors went to Itzel Carranco, while Emily Cooper won second prize; both were enrolled in honors A/P world history.
Topics were based on youth involvement in government affairs that make a positive difference in their community and society. Awards and commendation were presented to the winners at the May 22 city council meeting by Mayor Paul Tanaka.

St. Lawrence sixth-graders mentor L.A. kindergarten students
On May 2, the sixth grade class at St. Lawrence Martyr School in Redondo Beach spend the day mentoring a kindergarten class at St. Columbkille School in South Los Angeles.
Joined by parents and teacher Kathy Padian, the class arrived with dozens of books they collected from a drive. The St. Lawrence sixth-graders then paired of with their kindergarten counterparts, reading, singing and just spending time with them. "It was a rewarding and heartfelt day for our sixth-graders," said Padian.
June Wiley named to Marymount posts
Marymount College President Michael Brophy has announced the appointment of June Wiley as vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty, effective July 1. Dr. Wiley will be coming to Marymount following many years of academic service at Ottawa University in Phoenix, where she served as dean of instruction and the university's chief academic officers since 2004.
"We are delighted to welcome Dr. Wiley to Marymount, said Dr. Brophy. "A graduate of a Marymount institution herself, she well understands our mission and has the experience and expertise to lead the advancement of our academic programs and faculty."
Dr. Wiley said she cared deeply about Marymount's rich history and mission and "will do my utmost to maintain and enhance the college's tradition of academic excellence." |
