Archdiocesan priesthood class of '82 marks silver jubilee year

By Hermine Lees

Seven priests of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are celebrating their silver jubilee of ordination in 2007.

The seven were ordained June 12, 1982 by Cardinal Timothy Manning at St. Vibiana's Cathedral. Since then, they have served in parish ministry, as well as (in some cases) education and diocesan ministry.

They have celebrated (or will soon celebrate) their jubilees in their respective parishes, after having recently marked the occasion with a gathering at St. John's Seminary, Camarillo. Following are brief profiles of the silver jubilarians.

His parish assignments have included St. Bridget, Van Nuys; St. Mary Magdalen, Camarillo; St. Martha, Valinda; and Our Lady Guadalupe, Hammel Street. He also has served on the faculty of St. Bernard and Bishop Amat High Schools and as rector of Queen of Angels High School Seminary. Currently pastor of St. Anthony, El Segundo, he will become pastor of San Buenaventura Mission, Ventura, in July.

He has been pastor at St. Martha, Valinda, since 1996.

As an associate he served at Our Lady of Lourdes, East L.A.; Holy Family, Glendale; St. Charles, North Hollywood; and St. Stephen, Monterey Park. He has been pastor of Nativity, Torrance, since 2000, after serving as administrator.

Father Paul Hruby was born in Los Angeles and attended Holy Family School, Glendale, & Queen of Angels High School. He was an associate pastor at St. Mariana de Paredes, Pico Rivera, and pastor at St. Elizabeth, Van Nuys, and St. Columbkille, Los Angeles. Since 1999 he has been pastor at Incarnation, Glendale.

Msgr. Kevin Kostelnik was born in Lorain, Ohio, moved to California and attended Los Altos High School and Mount San Antonio College. He was an associate at St Andrew, Pasadena; St. John Fisher, Rancho Palos Verdes; and St. Vibiana Cathedral. For 10 years he was priest-secretary to Cardinal Roger Mahony, and in 1997 was named the first pastor of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. He was named a chaplain to his holiness (monsignor) in 1992, and in 2000 a prelate of his holiness.
