Dolores Levada Sartain
Funeral Mass was celebrated May 25 at St. Hedwig Church, Los Alamitos, for Dolores Levada Sartain, 74, who died May 21 at home surrounded by her family. She was the sister of Cardinal William J. Levada, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
A fourth generation Californian, Mrs. Sartain was born in Martinez and grew up in Long Beach where she attended both St. Anthony elementary and high school. At UCLA she received a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree from Long Beach State. After 41 years of teaching in the Long Beach School District and St. Maria Goretti School, she retired in 1996.
In 1959 Dolores married Jim Sartain, whom she had met at St. Anthony elementary school. They were married for 48 years. For more than 45 years she was an active parishioner at St. Hedwig Church and despite numerous illnesses, she continued to work in her garden and play the piano.
She is survived by her husband, daughters Julianne and Stephanie, five grandchildren and her brother, Cardinal Levada. The family requests that donations be made in her name to the Alzheimer Association or the Precious Life Shelter in Los Alamitos.
Fr. George Dawson, CSsR
Funeral Mass was celebrated May 30 in Liguori, Mo., for Redemptorist Father George Dawson, 83, who died May 26.
Born in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Father Dawson was ordained a Redemptorist priest in 1950. He served as a parish priest, high school instructor and missionary to the English and Spanish-speaking peoples of Mexico, Arizona and Southern California.
Locally, he served twice at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Whittier (1959-65 and 1974-87). Memorial donations may be mailed to the Redemptorists/Denver Province Development Office, 1230 S. Parker Road, Denver, CO 80231.
Ida Mae Miller
Funeral Mass was celebrated May 21 at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Church, Lomita, for Ida Mae Miller, 93, who died May 15. She was the mother of Deacon Bob Miller, who serves as a regional assistant for San Pedro Region Auxiliary Bishop Alexander Salazar.
Patricia Nuanez
Funeral Mass was celebrated May 30 at All Souls Catholic Cemetery, Long Beach, for Patricia Nuanez, who died May 24. She was the mother of Father Anthony Nuanez. |
