Sr. Nancy Jean Turner, veteran Pasadena educator, dies

Funeral Mass was celebrated May 4 at Holy Family Church in South Pasadena for Sister of the Holy Child Jesus Nancy Jean Turner (M. Edward Mary), 71, who died of cancer April 28 in Pasadena. She had been a Sister of the Holy Child Jesus for 52 years, serving nearly 40 years in Pasadena.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, she moved with her family to Glendale, when she was in the fifth grade. In 1953, she graduated from Mayfield Senior School of the Holy Child Jesus in Pasadena and, after spending a year at the San Diego College for Women (now the University of San Diego), she entered the Society of the Holy Child Jesus and professed her final vows in 1962.

Sister Turner earned her bachelor's degree in education from Villanova University in Villanova, Pa., in 1963 and a master's degree in elementary education (1970) from the UCLA. From 1962-70, she taught second grade at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1976, she began teaching second grade at Mayfield Junior School of the Holy Child Jesus where she remained for 19 years. The playground at the school was dedicated in her honor in 1995.

Sister Turner served on the Board of Trustees at Mayfield Senior School of the Holy Child Jesus in Pasadena from 1993-2006, longer than anyone else in the history of the school's board. She also was a member of the Mayfield Alumnae Council for more than 30 years. In 1996, she received the Cornelian Award, which is awarded to an alumna who exemplifies the Holy Child ideal of service.

From 1996-2006, Sister Turner worked as a special education teacher at Five Acres, a child and family services agency providing treatment and education in community-based and residential programs in Altadena, Calif. She is survived by her sister, Mary Kendrick and many nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. Memorial donations may be sent to the SHCJ Retirement Fund, 460 Shadeland Ave., Drexel Hill, PA 19026.
