Mayfield Schools celebrate 75 years in Pasadena

text only version

More than 750 alumni, students, parents, faculty and friends of Mayfield Junior School and Mayfield Senior School helped commemorate the institutions' 75th anniversary at a celebration Mass April 21, 2007 in Pasadena.

Cardinal Roger Mahony presided at the liturgy which honored the vision and determination of the schools' founding Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus, the mission and Holy Child traditions of each school and the faith-filled Catholic community. Auxiliary Bishop Gabino Zavala concelebrated along with Monsignors Tobias English and James Gehl, Passionist Father Pat Brennan and Father Alan Philip.

Students from both schools served as cantors, altar servers, choir members and liturgical dancers, and several Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus and Mayfield families participated in the Mass. After the homily, a special blessing was given for past and present faculty and staff. Following the Mass, guests enjoyed a light lunch and the opportunity to visit with friends, classmates and teachers.

Throughout this milestone year, Mayfield Junior School and Mayfield Senior School have joined to "remember the past, celebrate the present and believe in the future of Holy Child education in Pasadena," officials said. Beginning last September, the schools have hosted several special anniversary events including a Mayfield Memories Night held in October at Mayfield Senior School and a Diamond Jubilee Gala held this March at the Ritz-Carlton, Huntington Hotel. The celebration Mass was the culminating anniversary event for the year.

In their commitment to Christian service, Mayfield Senior School students contribute over 10,000 hours of service a year in a variety of projects, while every grade level at the Junior School reaches out to the community through various service projects and fundraising efforts.
