Catholic schools seek CIF basketball, soccer titles

Four Catholic teams are in the hunt for CIF-Southern Section basketball titles this weekend as the finals commence in Long Beach and Anaheim.

Girls' championship action will take place March 2 at the Pyramid in Long Beach, with St. Mary's Academy and Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto playing for Division IVAA and VA crowns, respectively. St. Mary's will play Costa Mesa, and Conaty-Loretto will meet L.A. Baptist.

In boys' basketball championship games March 3 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Mater Dei will play Artesia for the Division IAA title, while St. Bernard will play Pasadena in the Division IIAA finals.

In soccer, eight Catholic boys and girls teams were alive in their respective division semifinals entering play Feb. 27. All final matches are set March 3.

The details, by sport and division:

Girls Basketball:
Division IAA:
Santa Margarita and Bishop Amat each lost their semifinal games, to Brea Olinda and Long Beach Poly, respectively.

Division IVAA: St. Mary's Academy of Inglewood defeated Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana, 59-34, and reached the final March 2 in Long Beach against Costa Mesa.

Division VAA: Villanova Prep lost to Village Christian in the semifinals after beating Providence in the quarterfinals. La Reina also lost in the quarters.

Division VA: Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto will meet L.A. Baptist in the finals March 2 after a 44-42 win over Crossroads. Alverno and Sacred Heart each reached the quarterfinals before losing.

Boys Basketball:
Division IAA: Mater Dei will play Artesia in the finals March 3 in Anaheim following a 76-66 win over Compton.

Division IIAA: St. Bernard will play Pasadena in the finals March 3 following a 57-52 win over Arroyo Valley, a winner over Bishop Montgomery in the quarterfinals.

Division IIIAA: Santa Clara reached the quarterfinals before losing to La Canada.

Division IVA: St. Anthony and La Salle made the semifinals before losing to Buckley and Twentynine Palms, respectively.

Division VA: St. Bonaventure lost its semifinal game to Desert by a point, after Villanova Prep was edged 51-50 in the quarterfinals by Rosamond, the other finalist.

Girls Soccer (all semifinals Feb. 27):
Division I: Mater Dei vs. Buena.

Division IV: Bishop Montgomery vs. Serrano; La Salle vs. Granite Hills.

Division V: Notre Dame Academy vs. Oaks Christian.

Boys Soccer (all SF Feb. 27):
Division I: Loyola vs. Long Beach Wilson; Santa Margarita vs. Millikan.

Division IV: Cathedral vs. Coachella Valley.

Division V: Salesian vs. La Canada.
