World Marriage Day celebrations begin Feb. 4

By Paula Doyle
text only version

Three World Marriage Day liturgies will take place over the next two weekends in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, honoring couples celebrating anniversaries of 25, 30, 40, 50 or more years of matrimony.

In the Santa Barbara Region, two Masses with Santa Barbara Region Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Curry presiding will be celebrated: at St. Louis de Montfort in Santa Maria on Feb. 4 (2 p.m.), and on Feb. 11 at Our Lady of the Assumption in Ventura (2:30 p.m.).

Also on Feb. 11, Cardinal Roger Mahony will preside at the archdiocesan celebration at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles (3:30 p.m.). All celebrations are sponsored by the archdiocesan Office of Family Life.

"World Marriage Day promotes sanctity of marriage and its importance in our culture," said Candy Metoyer, Office of Family Life marriage preparation coordinator. "It's an honor to witness a couple's love for each other, and it's a great reflection of God's love for us."

Father Jim Anguiano, pastor of St. Anthony Church in El Segundo, will concelebrate the Feb. 11 liturgy with the cardinal and three regional bishops at the Cathedral where his parents will be in the congregation.

"I am very much looking forward to celebrating World Marriage Day with my parents," said Father Anguiano. "Their witness and commitment and love for 60 years speak loudly to me as a priest. Their faithfulness to each other and to me and my brothers and sisters has been a model for us to learn the importance of faithfulness in our own lives."

Couples interested in attending World Marriage Day liturgy at the Cathedral should contact the Office of Family Life at (213) 637-7228 by Feb. 5. Registration is $35 per couple, with participants receiving a commemorative certificate, ribbon, pin and souvenir. Cathedral parking is $5; and overflow parking at the Los Angeles Music Center, $8.

For information on the Santa Barbara Region World Marriage Day celebrations, call the Regional Office at (805) 682-0442 weekdays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
