'Beyond the Notes' musicians day
set Feb. 3 in L.A.

Some of the local church's most recognized figures in liturgical music will participate in "Beyond the Notes: Praying Music from the Inside Out," a day for parish singers and musicians scheduled Feb. 3 at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church, Los Angeles.

Presented by the archdiocesan Office for Worship, the day is designed as a day "singing and praying the music of our universal faith for choir directors, choir members, cantors and instrumentalists," said Sandra Dooley, Office for Worship director.

Scheduled presenters (and topics) include:

---Ed Archer (small parish choirs), music director at St. Monica Church, Santa Monica, and music director for Youth Day at the Religious Education Congress.

---John Flaherty (contemporary parish music), director of Liturgy and Music at Loyola Marymount University, and music director at the Religious Education Congress since 1991.

---Eddie Hilley (Gospel music), music director at St. Agatha Church, Los Angeles, and director of the Los Angeles Archdiocesan Gospel Choir.

---Paul Salamunovich (Gregorian chant), music director at St. Charles Borromeo Church in North Hollywood since 1949, and music director Emeritus of the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

---Christopher Walker (the song of the assembly), director of music at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Westwood, and an internationally known composer, speaker and musician.

Welcoming will be led by Frank Brownstead, director of music at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, and former music director in the Office for Worship.

Our Mother of Good Counsel Church is located at 2060 N. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., with the program starting at 9 a.m. and concluding at 3 p.m. The cost is $15 per person, with a maximum of $150 per parish when registrations are sent together. Drinks will be provided.
