Four Catholic teams still unbeaten in high school football

text only version

Upsets abounded last week in high school football, knocking two Catholic teams from the unbeaten ranks and sending league races into an early frenzy.

The most prominent upsets were Bishop Amat edging previously unbeaten St. Francis, 29-28, and La Salle's 35-7 stunner over previously unbeaten Cantwell-Sacred Heart in a Camino Real League opener that incongruously left La Salle (2-5 overall) in first and Cantwell (6-1 overall) tied for last.

With four weeks of games remaining before playoff action begins, four area Catholic high school football teams share perfect 6-0 records: Notre Dame, St. John Bosco, Santa Clara and Santa Margarita. The latter defeated previously unbeaten Mater Dei 17-7 last week; St. John Bosco won by forfeit; and Notre Dame and Santa Clara posted easy wins.

The state's top 10 teams as ranked by MaxPreps.com include Santa Margarita (No. 3), St. Bonaventure (No. 4), Notre Dame (No. 5), Mater Dei (No. 7) and St. John Bosco (No. 11). De La Salle of Concord in Northern California remains the state's top-ranked team and No. 3 nationally, with Santa Margarita at No. 18.

Following are a rundown of this week's games and a recap of last week's action, as well as a listing of teams and their current overall and league records.
