Mater Dei-Santa Margarita matchup tops weekend action

text only version

Five area Catholic high school football teams are ranked among the state's top 10 teams by MaxPreps as league action gets going this weekend for some local squads.

Mater Dei (No. 4), St. Bonaventure (No. 5), Santa Margarita (No. 6), St. John Bosco (No. 7) and Notre Dame (No. 8) are all on this week's list. De La Salle of Concord in Northern California is the state's top-ranked team. Unbeatens Mater Dei and Santa Margarita face off in a Trinity League opener Oct. 13 at Rancho Santa Margarita, a game that figures to be the top attraction in the Southland.

Last weekend, Cantwell-Sacred Heart's Cardinals ran their record to 6-0, with a convincing win over Don Bosco Tech. Standing at 5-0 are Mater Dei, Notre Dame, St. Francis, St. John Bosco, Santa Clara and Santa Margarita, while Alemany (4-1) was edged by Cathedral, 28-27.
