Deacon Peter Wilson surveys the new Deacon Mission Center sign in anticipation of the outreach mission's formal opening Oct. 21, 9 a.m.-noon, following a 9 a.m. thanksgiving Mass at St. Michael Church in Los Angeles. Occupying the ground floor of St. Michael's refurbished convent, the nonprofit center providing parish leadership programs and inner-city youth outreach ministries is the first contemporary outreach mission established by deacons in the region, and possibly the entire country, according to Wilson, a deacon at St. Rose of Lima Church, Simi Valley. Open to the public, the grand opening will feature presentations in spirituality, leadership and street ministry by Marian Fussy and Deacons Dave Miller and Gregory Patterson, respectively.
