Al Antczak: The keeper of our history

By Cardinal Roger Mahony
text only version

Mr. Al Antczak was not only an extraordinary journalist and editor for The Tidings newspaper, he was the keeper of the history of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles during its years of most vigorous growth and expansion.

He was able to capture the unique contributions of the Archbishops of Los Angeles during those phases and waves of growth. Throughout the years of Archbishop John J. Cantwell, Cardinal James Francis McIntyre, and Cardinal Timothy Manning he had the uncanny memory not only of what happened in the growth of the Archdiocese, but why and how. I frequently consulted Al on points of our past history, and very rarely did he have to look up anything. He knew and lived out that history of our Local Church.

Al Antczak was an editor of unequalled integrity and professionalism. He saw the world about us through the particular lenses of Jesus Christ and the Church. His editorials were always thoughtful, to the point, and challenging for all of us.

Now and then Al would ask me about running a particular story or editorial, and I would always respond that he should use his editorial judgment --- what was best for the Catholics of Los Angeles. And I was never disappointed.

When Bishop John Ward retired, I asked Al Antczak to conduct extensive interviews with Bishop Ward and to tape record them. Those two men knew more about the history of our Archdiocese than almost anyone. That project was completed, and through the contributions of both of these men of faith and commitment, we have recorded some of the most fascinating years of the growth and development of our Archdiocese.

I will miss Al greatly, and I pray that God will welcome him into eternal life where at last Al Antczak will see the totality of God's love and goodness. May he rest in peace.
