Looking Ahead

Regional Congresses to be held Sept. 30 through Nov. 4

Each of the five pastoral regions of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will host day-long regional congresses featuring training workshops in youth ministry, confirmation, junior high ministry and more.

The San Fernando Regional Congress, which includes a youth track, takes place Sept. 30 at Bishop Alemany High School in Mission Hills. Contact Lynn Lang at (818) 365-5123 for more information.

The San Pedro Regional Congress, which includes a youth track, takes place Oct. 7 at St. Matthias High School in Downey. Contact Karina Plascencia at (562) 630-6272.

The San Gabriel Regional Congress takes place Oct. 14 at Bishop Amat Memorial High School in La Puente. Contact Eileen Gateley at (626) 962-7707.

The Santa Barbara Regional Congress, which includes a youth track, takes place Oct. 21 at Bishop Garcia Diego Catholic High School in Santa Barbara. Contact Sue Spies at (805) 569-1135.

Consistent Life Ethic Conference: Oct. 7

A conference about the Catholic consistent life ethic will take place Oct. 7 at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

Vincentian Father Richard Benson, a moral theologian at St. John's Seminary in Camarillo, will speak on "Health Care: Abortion, End of Life, HIV/AIDS" followed by a group discussion. Rosemary Ruther, a theologian at Claremont Graduate School of Theology, will talk about "Life and Nonviolence: War, Poverty, Weapons of Mass Destruction, Racism, Homophobia," followed by a group discussion.

A Sunday Vigil Mass will be followed by dinner and then concert given by Bob Hurd, Anawim and Friends.

CLUE California Statewide Conference: Oct. 25-26

Faith, Poverty and the Future of California: Building a Faith-Based Movement for Economic Justice takes place Oct. 25 and 26 in San Francisco. Sponsored by Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice, the state-wide conference will offer religious and lay leaders skill building sessions for organizing within parishes and supporting economic justice campaigns throughout California. Special attention will be given to public policy campaigns benefiting low-wage workers, the state's health care crises, and immigration reform.

Barbara Ehrenreich, author of the New York Times bestseller "Nickel and Dimed," will reflect on low-wage poverty in the U.S. Oct. 25.
